5 Outcomes when you complete the High School Preparation (HSP) course

16/01/2019

If you’re thinking about whether the High School Preparation course is for you, it’s good to know what life will look like on the other side.

Is it worth it? What will you have achieved once you complete the course? What skills and knowledge will you walk away with? And how will that help you in your education journey and academic career?

Here’s 5 outcomes you can expect when you complete a High School Preparation course.

1. Improved confidence
The High School Preparation course will give you the confidence to become part of the busy and bustling world of high school in Australia. Thanks to the new knowledge you have acquired around cultural awareness, subjects studied in high school, education curriculums and how to write essays and approach exams, your transition from life at home to life in an Australian high school will be much easier. Your English language skills will have improved which will help with social interaction, connecting with other international students and Australians, and give you the self-assurance you need to take part in extra-curricular activities like joining sports teams. Fun!

2. Knowledge of subjects studied in Australian high schools
When you understand the curriculum in Australian high schools, and the subject’s students study, you have a better chance of performing well in those subjects. The High School Preparation course gives you the strong foundation you need to start studying subjects with confidence. From Geography to Visual Arts, Mathematics to History and Science, you’ll leave the High School Preparation course armed with extra knowledge that will set you up for success.

3. Improved English language skills
There’s no better way to improve language skills than to live and breathe the English language every day. Thanks to having opportunities to learn and practice your communication every day as part of the High School Preparation Course, your grammar, vocabulary, reading, speaking, writing and importantly, listening will have improved.

4. Improved academic skills
The way students learn is different in each culture and country. They might be slight differences, but it can still impact how well you do in class. The High School Preparation Course puts you on the front foot with academic language and how to use it. These are lifelong skills that will benefit your education journey, especially if you are looking to move into a university or college here in Australia once you graduate from high school. You will be clear on how to write and format essays, research and reference correctly, and how to approach exam situations. This will help with your academic self-confidence and set you on the path of success.

5. Connection with the Australian way of life
Life is different here in Australia! When you study here, you experience that for yourself! Having immersed yourself in the High School Preparation course, you will have a strong understanding of what makes Australians the way they are and what daily life is like here. You will start your high school journey with confidence and excitement. Hey, you’ll be an honorary Aussie!

4 ways international students can prepare for high school in Australia

16/01/2019

There are many reasons why you might be preparing to go to high school in Australia. Perhaps the family is moving here because a parent is being transferred to Australia for their career. Maybe you have won a scholarship to finish your high school education in Australia. Maybe your family has decided you will receive a valuable, well-rounded education by studying at a high school in Australia. Or perhaps you are keen to enrol in an Australian university and have decided to complete high school here, so you can understand the education system better and have a better chance of matriculating straight into one of Australia’s top universities.

So many reasons! Whatever the reason, it’s an exciting step to take and here are five ways you can prepare for high school in Australia.

Read
Reading is such a great way to brush up on the Australian way of life. Check out online news websites such as www.smh.com.au and www.thenewdaily.com.au to get an understanding of the landscape of Australian news and politics. Read travel guides such as Lonely Planet’s Guide to Sydney. Travel guides are great for valuable information about public transport and how much things cost to get around. Subscribe to Australian magazines online, and perhaps do some research on some classic Australian literature and order them too. Books worth reading would be Picnic at Hanging Rock for something historical and a little eerie, Looking for Alibrandi which is a little more contemporary and represents teenage life in many parts of Australia and Anh Do’s The Happiest Refugee, which is a funny and powerful account of assimilating into Australian society.

Listen
Podcasts are such a great way to flex your listening skills, improve your communication and educate yourself all at the same time. If you’re into Maths and Science, listen to Sleek Geeks. The Allusionist is a fun podcast that looks at the use of English language in society – great for brushing up on your English skills. To get an understanding of what kids are talking about and questioning here in Australia, Short & Curly is a good podcast where the hosts discuss what you would do in hypothetical situations, and also raises ethical questions.

Watch
If YouTube is more your thing, check out Eddie Woo or go direct to his website on www.misterwootube.com – Mr Woo is a Sydney based Maths teacher who has created a fantastic YouTube channel to help high school kids understand Maths.

There are also some good TV series you can stream or download to get a feel for life as a high school student in Australia. While they have dramatic storylines, it’s still a good way for you to get a snapshot of what life is like in Australia for teenagers. Dance Academy and Nowhere Boys are good. For something a little grittier and for older teenagers, check out Slide.

High School Preparation course
Australian high schools are bustling centres of education, social interaction and extra-curricular activities. Understanding how they operate, and what to expect when you attend an Australian high school will help you with your own self-confidence and education journey. That’s why high school preparation courses are so useful for helping international students to prepare for daily and academic life at high school in Australia.

At a High School Preparation course you will learn:

Vocabulary and content relevant to the Australian high school curriculum
Subject specific content on topics such as Maths, History, Geography and many more
How to use academic language when writing essays and longer pieces
How to research and reference for projects and essays
Grammar and useful terminology specific to life at high school
You will also take part in extra-curricular activities including sports and cultural excursions. Everything you need to prepare yourself for life at an Australian high school!
